Batman

So my entire national team is in New York this week for our Q4 offsite. Normally we go to San Francisco, so it’s really fun having them here (and kind of nice to get a break from traveling across the country). I adore my job and my team and our offsites are always a good time.  Here’s a shot from this morning (peep my very worn out “Don’t Mess With Texas” coffee mug on the table.  Texas Forever.)

Every quarter, one of our sessions is a “Get To Know Me” slide show presentation. We each have a google doc with different prompts (one per slide) that are updated every quarter. We have to add a picture to every slide to answer the question and then we each present them to the team. Some questions we’ve had in the past…

How did you spend your summers as a kid?

What’s your go-to, pump-up music right now?

What was your dream job growing up?

I was working on my Q4 GTKM slides last week and the first question was “What superhero/comic book character are you?” This seemed easy enough but actually proved quite difficult and got me thinking about heroes.

I’ve noticed that when I’m reading scripture, I tend to put myself in the Batman role, if you will.  Somehow I see things from the perspective of God or Jesus and I roll my eyes at the stupid Israelites or the Pharisees and religious leaders who just didn’t get it. Even in the times when I’m feeling a little more humble, I still cast myself as the “Robin.” You know, one of the disciples (never Judas though, lol), or John the Baptist or Esther or some other biblical sidekick.

It really is God’s grace to me to remind me that I’m no hero. I’m not even the sidekick. I’m the villain of the story. I’m an Israelite grumbling in the wilderness. I’m the Pharisee judging the speck in my brother’s eye and missing the plank in my own. I’m the rich young ruler (well minus the rich and young and ruler part) who wouldn’t give up his comfort to follow Jesus.

I’d make a terrible superhero.

But he is the perfect one. And the only one I want as the hero of my story.

By the way, if you’re curious where I landed on the GTKM slide, I decided to skip the superhero thing altogether and go with my comic book spirit animal, Lucy van Pelt.
